College 101: Terms & Definitions


Common Terminology
  • Accuplacer is a placement test used by colleges and universities to assess your current skill level and readiness for the types of schoolwork you'll be required to do in college specifically, reading, writing, and math
  • bookstore has items available for purchase such textbooks, lab books, class supplies, clothing, etc. The Bookstore may also rent textbooks or course materials for an up-front fee for an entire semester. Material rented from the Bookstore must be returned to the Bookstore.
  • Canvas central location for online and in-person classrooms
  • course is a unit of instruction in a subject that typically last one term
  • discussions (or discussion board in Canvas) are informal communication between students in a course or they can be used as assignments for grading purposes. All discussions are public and all course students can view and reply to a discussion.
  • elearning is conducted via electronic media typically on the internet
  • email or student email at Camden County College is given to all students at the time of registration. This is different than your inbox in Canvas
  • FAFSA or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form is an application for federal student aid
  • hybrid courses meet on campus at designated days and times but also utilize technology outside of the classroom. It is basically a combination of in-person and online classes.
  • inbox (in Canvas) is a messaging tool used in Canvas to communicate with your professor or other students unlike the discussions, these are private between you and the person or group. This is different than your email.
  • library loans material such as books, DVDs and CDs to users that need to be returned. It also subscribes to databases that provide access to electronic resources – articles, e-books, etc. The library also provides some textbooks but they are for in-library use only. The library also provides anatomical models, computers and laptops, calculators, quiet and group study spaces all for use in the library.  
  • lockdown browser (Respondus) is a tool that locks down the testing environment to prevent cheating during online exams
  • modules are used in Canvas to separate content in a course and can be grouped by day, week, topic, etc.
  • portal is the login for Canvas and also called MyCCC or MyCCC portal
  • Registrar is the keeper of student records. They process registration requests, schedule classes and maintain class lists.
  • Respondus (lockdown browser) is a tool that locks down the testing environment to prevent cheating during online exams
  • rubric (grading rubric) is a guideline used to explain the scoring criteria for grading of an assignment
  • syllabus is an outline of a course. It is a guide of what will be expected from the course over the semester. It can include course policies, rules and regulations, required texts and a schedule of assignments. A syllabus should explain everything you need to know about how a course will be run and what will be expected of you.
  • tutoring is available to assist you with your coursework, answer questions about homework and test preparation. Students registered at CCC are provided with free, unlimited tutoring on-campus and 5 hours of free virtual tutoring per semester (see link in Canvas).
